Need help choosing a name for your startup or new product?
Then you might want to check out the new iPhone application,
Nomina, designed by a Santa Rosa, Calif.
company. You just feed potential names into the application and it searches a
whole slew of online databases to quickly ascertain if the name is already
trademarked or in use.
The application searches the U.S. Patent and Trademark
office, domain registries for everything from .com to .tv, Reuters …

FX Networks confirmed it is shopping around “It’s Always
Sunny in Philadelphia”
for syndication, and this is the reason it yanked more than 3 seasons of
episodes off authorized sites such as Hulu.com and FXnetworks.com.
“We’re getting ready to take the show into syndication,”
said John Solberg, a spokesman for FX in a phone interview.
New episodes will continue to premier on FX, but the company
wants to sell the rights to broadcast older seasons to other …

Change has come to Pandora.com, the popular free music site that lets
listeners craft radio stations to fit their tastes.
The site added 15-second
commercial breaks to its streaming music service Tuesday as it continues to experiment with new ways to generate revenue.
But its founder promised the site will never carry as many audio ads as broadcast radio, despite the fact it pays substantially higher royalty fees to the recording industry.
“The fears …

Why are robots so cool?
That is the question a group of artists look to explore at
an upcoming exhibit at the Sonoma
County Museum.
The show, titled “Robots: Evolution of a Cultural Icon,”
originally exhibited at the San Jose Museum of Art last year (around the time the
value of your 401K was cut in half.)
It relocates to our Redwood Empire next Friday, running from January
23 to April 5 (maybe this time our 401Ks …

Autonet Mobile is the Santa
Rosa startup that has already drawn positive coverage
from WSJ columnist Walt Mossberg for its innovative ability to turn any car,
truck or RV into a wireless hotspot.
I wrote about it in November.
And it’s in the news again, first at CES in Las Vegas and then at the North American
International Auto Show this week.
It announced agreements with major vendors that are likely
to get more routers into …

Update: Hulu’s chief executive apoligized Tuesday on his blog for yanking the episodes without warning and said the site would make all episodes available for another two weeks.
What would Charlie do if deprived of something he really,
really wanted?
Well, my guess is the cranky little character from the show
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
would freak out like many users of Hulu.com are doing.
On Friday, Hulu.com yanked all but 5 episodes of the …

Key vendors at Macworld say they’re not coming back, pushing the annual event closer to extinction.
My full story published Thursday in The Press Democrat is here.
Most vendors I spoke with said publicly they are waiting to see what other vendors do, but off the record at least two vendors immediately adjacent to Apple’s main exhibit said they are not returning. And a couple other key vendors in the South Hall …

I live blogged the keynote at my Twitter account: twitter.com/paperwords. If you’re not following me on Twitter, please do.
I just sent the final version of my story about the keynote to editor Chuck Buxton. The one on the Web site now (12:08 p.m.) was a shotgun version. Hopefully the more robust version will be online soon.
In summary, there was no new product announcemnt, just upgrades to products already in Apple’s …

I’ve attached the full Excel spreadsheet (located at the bottom of this post) that includes the nitty-gritty details of the forecast by Robert Eyler, director of the Center for Regional Economic Analysis at SSU. My story on the report appeared on the front page of Sunday’s paper and is located here online.
Beyond just the forecast, the spreadsheet contains lots of historic data on the county’s economy — everything from unemployment …
